ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Physiology is the subject which deals with the functional principles of living organisms. Though the subject deals with normal functioning of human body, however, perturbing a system reveals it's characteristics. As a corollary, human diseases can be regarded as the natural perturbation of the homeostasis. Hence, understanding its mechanism, not mere description of diseases is also the target for the physiologists.

Physiology and Medicine are inseparable, so health care is integrated with health related knowledge generation, but it is worthwhile to mention that identification of the demarcating line between Physiology and Pathology does not follow the binary logic. Physiology as a basic science, considers the holistic approach, in contrast with the molecule centric reductionism which has been regarded as the panacea of all health related problems. During the last few decades the progress of systems science and appreciation of biological complexity of the multicellular organism has relivened this concept.

The basic Physiology course in this university is oriented towards integrating the working of all the organ systems under homeostatic approach. It also includes the applied aspects distinctive to Human Physiology including Occupational Health Hazards, Ergonomics, Sports & Stress Physiology, Physiological Therapeutics and Regenerative Medicine, Systems Biology & Biomedical Engineering.
