ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Political Science is one of the first few departments which came into being on March 2, 2009. It had started with two whole time permanent teachers whose academic profiles are given below:

Ms. Payel Sen who is currently an Assistant Professor in the department and the Chaiperson of the Under Graduate Board of Studies is a product of the University of Calcutta. She stood first in first class in the M.A. examination held in 2005. She has been working primarily in the areas of Indian Politics and Administration with special focus on Rural and Urban governance. She has contributed articles in a few distinguished national journals and in the edited volumes. She has carried out empirical researches in the field of urban governance and development. She has co- authored books namely, Good Governance and Development Context and Concerns (with Professor Prabhat Datta) and Engendering Urban Governance in West Bengal (with Professor Prabhat Datta and Professor Dipankar Sinha). A registered Ph.D scholar in the department of Political Science Calcutta University, Ms. Payel Sen is currently engaged in conducting a field- based research on the functioning of Gram Unnayan Samitis ponsored by the Department of Panchayats and Rural Development, Government of West Bengal. She has also recently worked as a co- researcher in an empirical study on urban poverty in West Bengal sponsored by the Change management Unit, Kolkata Urban Basic Services for the Poor, Municipal Affairs Department, Government of West Bengal. She has also delivered lectures in seminars and workshops.

Ms. Nivedita Saha, also Assistant Professor in the department obtained her Post graduate degree in International Relations from Jadavpur University in the year 2000 . The areas of her academic interest include Politics in South Asia. She has also delivered a few lectures in Colleges under this University.

The academic load of the department is shared by following distinguished professors from neighbouring universities:

1. Professor Mohit Bhattacharya, formerly Centenary professor of Public Administration in the University of Calcutta and Vice Chancellor, University of Burdwan.
2. Professor Asok Kumar Mukhopadhyay, formerly Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Professor of Political Science, University of Calcutta.
3. Professor Prabhat Datta holds the chair of Centenary Professor of Public Administration, University of Calcutta. He is also the Chairperson of the Post Graduate Board of Studies and Convenor, PhD Committee in the Department of Political Science, WBSU.
4. Professor Tridib Chakraborti, Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University.
5. Professor Arunabha Ghosh, Department of Political Science, Rabindra Bharati University.

Currently, the department has student strength of 20 for each academic session. The department follows the Semester- based pattern of teaching and evaluation. The post graduate course is divided into four semesters, each with duration of six months. For each semester a mid- semester examination of 20 marks and an end- semester of 30 marks are regularly held on the completion of the prescribed syllabus in due time and the results are generally published within one month from the date of holding of examinations. There is a provision for mandatory dissertation as reflected in the detailed syllabus which follows:
Apart from the Post graduate degree programme, the department also intends to run a M.Phil cum Ph.D programme in line with the revised UGC regulations which is to commence shortly. The composition of the newly constituted Ph.D Committee of the department is displayed as under:
